Even as violent crime increases in the United States, Santa Clarita has once again made it into a ranking of the nation’s safest cities.
In 2020, Santa Clarita ranked #3 on safety.com’s list of safest cities and earlier this month the city was ranked 13th safest by SafeWise. Most recently, it earned third place in a ranking from Smartasset, a fintech company.
In its report, Smartasset said, “With 907 reported property crimes per 100,000 residents, Santa Clarita has the third-lowest homeownership rate in our study” and Santa Clarita “has the 16th-highest violent crime rate.” low (131 per 100,000 population).”
The study looked at crime statistics from 200 cities across the United States and found that the safest cities were concentrated in California and Texas. The top five cities were all located in these two states, with Santa Clarita ranking above two California cities, Sunnyvale and Glendale, and ranking below two Texas cities, McKinney and Frisco, the latter taking the top spot.
Statistics used in the report are from the FBI’s 2020 Uniform Crime Reporting Database and statistics from countyhealthrankings.org for 2021 data. Statistics collected included rates of violent crimes, property crimes, vehicle-related mortality, drug poisoning and the percentage of the population consuming alcohol excessively.
“To find our final ranking, we first ranked each city in each metric. Then we found the average ranking of each city, giving each metric equal weight,” the report says. “From there , we ranked cities based on their average ranking, assigning an index of 100 to the highest ranked city and an index of 0 to the lowest ranked city.”
In response to the Safewise ranking earlier this month, Santa Clarita Councilwoman Marsha McLean said she and her colleagues were committed to getting those kinds of results, but it was ultimately about of the feeling that the residents have here.
“Making sure our families always feel safe is a priority for me,” McLean said. “With crimes skyrocketing across the country, Santa Clarita stepping up a notch as one of America’s safest cities is a testament to how committed we are to investing in programs law enforcement and to support the men and women in law enforcement who work every day to protect us.
